Ο Θεόφιλος θαύμαζε απεριόριστα τη μορφή του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου. Μάλιστα, συνήθιζε να ντύνεται με ανάλογη φορεσιά. Ο Μ. Αλέξανδρος εικονίζεται έφιππος να ορμά στη μάχη. Κρατάει τα γκέμια του αλόγου με το αριστερό χέρι και το δόρυ με το δεξί. Το κεφάλι και τα πόδια δίνονται σε προφίλ ενώ ο κορμός σε μετωπική θέση. Αυτή η δυσαρμονία οφείλεται στο "ναϊφ" ύφος του ζωγράφου. Πέρα όμως από τις αναπόφευκτες ατέλειες, εντυπωσιάζει η πηγαία αίσθηση χρωματικής και συνθετικής ισορροπίας. Στις τοξωτές καμπύλες του μανδύα που ανεμίζει, αντιστοιχεί το σχήμα της περικεφαλαίας, ενώ δυναμισμό προσδίδει ο καλπασμός του αλόγου. Theophilos admired the figure of Alexander the Great immensely, in fact, he used to dress himself in a similar costume. The hero is depicted on horseback charging into battle. He holds the reins of the horse with his left hand and the spear with his right. The head and legs are shown in profile while the torso is in a frontal position. This disharmony is due to the painter's "naif" style. Beyond the inevitable imperfections, however, the source's sense of colour and compositional balance is impressive. The arching curves of the billowing cloak correspond to the shape of the helmet, while the horse's gallop adds dynamism. Pink, bright golden yellow, dark and light blue tones form a harmonious colour scheme.
